Mixed Media Art
How to Paint Again
I am new to this design world, an emerging artist/designer. I have created visual art for over 15 years (successfully and unsuccessfully). I love working with my hands so mixed media came naturally. After I lost my job in 2009, I focused my energy on my art career as Mayshanna Pandora Art. I participated in several juried shows, won some awards, and worked with several non-profits; but, like any curious creative I wanted to do more.
Returning to school before I turned 30 was always on my bucket list, and that deadline was fast approaching (the theme music from Jaws plays in the background). I did some research and in the Fall 2010 I applied to Wake Tech Community College. While there, I learned the difference between being a designer and being an artist; how to create designs on paper, manipulate them on a computer screen using Adobe Software, and integrate the designs to a website. I learned I am still green to the design world.
Despite how many classes I take, how much software I learn, and how many portfolios I create, design is a forever evolving practice. I learned the design practice requires love, patience, and curiosity. Upon graduation I want to take the time to focus and understand the concept, history, and development side of design. I feel in order for me to grow as a designer I need to understand the theories make designs work and what could cause them fail. In order to accomplish this I plan to take the next two years working as a freelancer, intern, and/or contractor to exposure myself to as many different design disciplines as possible.
